The fortified town of Taavetti was founded at the crossroads of the Vyborg high road (nowadays Main Road no. 6) that runs along the Salpausselkä ridge and the road leading south to Hamina. Taavetti is the main population centre of the present-day municipality of Luumäki.
1773 The Empress of Russia, Catherine the Great, founds the fortified town of Davidov. The bastion fortification is constructed as a near-circle. On the northern flank there is a large citadel instead of bastions. A Russian garrison area is built to a square plan within the fortress walls. The local Finnish peasant population is very small.
1803 Russia abandons the fortress of Taavetti. The fortress walls and garrison buildings fall into disrepair.
Mid-1980s Restoration of the ruins of the fortress begins. The fortress wall at Taavetti was largely destroyed when the centre of the municipality of Luumäki expanded into the fortress area in the 19th century. Restoration of the citadel part, which is best preserved, is nearing completion under the direction of the National Board of Antiquities and the Ministry of Labour. Open/air events are held there in the summer. The municipal offices of Luumäki have been built next to the citadel.
It is planned to continue conservation of the ruins of the fortress.
